After reading the column about ballots in Spanish, I had to write. First, let me tell you that I am not of Hispanic descent, but I admire the Hispanic culture and at one time was very close to marrying a Latina. I understand and to some point agree with Danny and Catherine, but Lily’s response was, to put it mildly, not well thought out. First, to make ballots in English only should not discourage people to vote, but encourage them to learn proficient English. I believe most people who come here do so to better their lives. It takes hard work and dedication to improve yourself and learning English, which is the primary language spoken in our country, should be a priority. Becoming a citizen and earning the privilege to vote takes some time and I think there should be sufficient time to learn the language of your new country. Next, and this is where Lily really took a turn off the road, she talked about this issue being comparable to not allowing ballots in Braille. What were you thinking? You can teach a person to speak a different language, but when was the last time you taught a blind person to see? Put some thought into your answers before you publish them.
